Maggie's story

Maggie is a house beagle.  This means she can spend the majority of her time indoors.  While she still sleeps inside at night, she now loves being outside in the winter and summer.   Before her SunDog Home, Maggie would lie on the floor in the sun as it came through the kitchen window.  As the sun’s rays shifted on the floor, Maggie would move to stay in its warmth.

Maggie would also jump up on a kitchen stool to look out of the window.  Even from this vantage point she could see only a limited amount of her yard.

The SunDog Home offers Maggie the sun’s heat, wind protection, and a greater view of her environment than she has inside the house.  During the winter months of Iowa this is her preferred spot during the day—and she does have a choice.  Maggie is trained to ring a small bell at the back door when she wants to go outside.   Watching her lounge in her solar home is entertaining and rewarding for her master in knowing that while she is a domesticated housedog, her natural, instinctive needs are being met.  Even while resting, she can still be the watchdog of activities in her yard.

When Maggie’s masters go to work in the morning, Maggie goes outside to her home and lies in the den with her head resting on the Den entrance.  She still wants to see what is going on.  Maggie also has a K9-Kozy which is a blanket attached to the top inside edge of the den in the front and back.  This allows the blanket to drape over her as she lies down, giving her both psychological and physical comfort.

When her master comes home for lunch, Maggie greets him and they both go into the house.  When the issue of “treats” has been resolved, Maggie rings the bell to go back to her SunDog home.  One would think that on a cold, northern Iowa, winter day a dog that sleeps inside at night and had the opportunity to stay inside for another 30-45 minutes, would do so.   Not Maggie!  The instinct to lie in the sun and watch her territory while being sheltered from the elements is too strong.

The SunDog Solar Home has been a real hit with Maggie.  Any sun gives her a temperature above the ambient along with fresh air. On February 1, 2001 the ambient temperature in Spencer, IA. was -4°F and the wind chill was -31°F (cold NW wind). The sun was shining brightly.  Maggie was enjoying herself in her +65°F Solar Home.

Whether you own a smaller housedog or larger hunting dog, allow it to enjoy the warmth of the sun and while escaping from wind, rain, and snow.
